The Adelaide Council has approved a new ten-year transport and movement strategy that it claims will make the city’s streets safer, more connected and easier for people use.

 

The Smart Move – The city of Adelaide Transport and Movement Strategy 2012-2022 addresses the issues of future planning of the city’s transport needs.

 

Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the Strategy is part of Council’s ‘One City, Many Places’ initiative.

 

“Smart Move is a long-term plan setting out a carefully balanced approach to transport that promotes choice. Whether it be by foot, bike, car or public transport, we want the city to be easy to enter and to get around,” Mayor Yarwood said.

 

“Today we have 200,000 people coming into the CBD every day. This Strategy addresses a planned increase over the next 30 years of at least 100,000 residents, workers, students and visitors traveling to and around the city every day so that Adelaide remains one of the world’s most liveable cities.”

 

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Patrick Conlon said the State Government would continue to work with Council to improve transport into and around the city.

 

“Encouraging more people to use public transport will go a long way toward easing congestion in the city. We’re committed to providing commuters with an efficient and reliable public transport system and have invested more money than any Government to achieve these ambitions,” Mr Conlon said.
