Leighton Contractors has signed five year Framework Agreements with mining giant Rio Tinto for the delivery of a stream of earthworks projects and a stream of structural, mechanical, piping (SMP) projects as part of Rio Tinto’s 353 Mtpa (million tonnes per annum) expansion program in the Pilbara.

 

The Framework Agreements will deliver the earthworks contracts for the Eastern Stream of Rio Tinto’s expansion, which covers the Hope Downs 4 Mine, Marandoo Mine, Yandicoogina Mine and Koodaideri Mine. 

 

Additionally the Framework Agreements includes SMP work in the Western Stream of Rio Tinto’s expansion which covers Brockman 4 Mine Phase 2, Western Turner Syncline Mine, Brockman 4 Mine Phase 3 and Nammuldi Mine. 

 

“This Framework Agreement also allows us to commit experienced staff, including Indigenous personnel,” Leighton Contractor’s General Manager Graeme Dunn said.

 

Leighton Contractors, in joint venture with Ngarda are currently delivering the earthworks on Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs 4 and Marandoo Mine. 

 

Leighton Contractors was recently awarded the first structural, mechanical and piping contract for the Brockman 4 Mine which is due to be completed by July 2012.

 

The announcement comes after Leighton Contractors, through its Mining Division, was been awarded a contract extension worth $125 million for the provision of mining services at the Moorvale Mine in Central Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

 

The contract, awarded by a subsidiary of Peabody Energy, extends the previous agreement period from June 2012 to September 2013 and includes management, fleet maintenance and operational services for mining at the project.
