Mine deaths prompt fundraising
Workmates are raising funds following the tragic deaths of two miners at the Dugald River underground zinc mine in Queensland.
Dylan Langridge and Trevor Davis were working at the MMG mine in northwest Queensland when their vehicle fell part-way down a 15-metre void.
The ute was extracted a day later, but the two men had died from their injuries.
Fellow miners from the same crew at Dugald River have set up a GoFundMe page to support their friends’ families.
The page says “losing a friend is never easy. Losing two at the same time is unthinkable…there are simply no words to describe how much harder that hits”.
Within hours, over $15,000 has been raised, with a goal of $20,000.
The pages describes Dylan Langridge as “a loving father that would do anything for his children and a crew mate who will be sorely missed by all”.
Trevor Davis, known as “Trev”, was known for being willing to put others first and leaving a mark on everyone he worked alongside, the page said.
“I can still see that full body chuckle, it rolls up past your belly ending in a nod you just can’t seem to shake, never taking anything too seriously.”
Local MP Robbie Katter said his entire community was in mourning, and urged people to keep the family, friends and workmates of the two men in their prayers.
The Traeger MP added that it was also important that people recognise those they know in their community who work in the mines and “be grateful for the job they do and appreciate them coming home safely each shift.”
Resources Safety and Health Queensland will investigate the accident when the site is safe to enter.
The incident has highlighted potentially widespread safety issues in the Queensland mining industry.
