Rio Tinto Gove leases renewed
The Northern Territory Government has renewed leases held by Rio Tinto Alcan on the Gove Peninsula, extending most leases for a further 42 years..
All residents and businesses will be contacted by Rio Tinto Alcan and informed of the sub-lease renewal process.
The leases date back to 1968, when the Federal Government entered into an agreement with Nabalco (now Rio Tinto Alcan) for the mining of bauxite in the region.
Under this agreement, the Commonwealth granted 42-year leases for the establishment of a mine and township. The NT Government is now responsible for most of the leases.
Discussions between Rio Tinto Alcan, the Northern Land Council and Traditional Owners to establish a formal Agreement to support the continuation of mining, recognising the rights of the Traditional Owners of the land, and setting out a package of benefits for Traditional Owners, are at an advanced stage.
