Santos bids to cut road toll near mines
A mining firm has taken up the challenge of spreading safety awareness, hoping to teach drivers to avoid the ‘fatal five’ causes of road deaths in Queensland.
Australian mining company Santos unveiled three highly visible reminders for road safety. Their will tour the resource-heavy Darling Downs and Surat Basin region to spread their vital message.
Santos social performance manager John Phalen says if it goes well then the company will put more safety-conscious vehicles out for road-users to observe.
Mr Phalen said Santos monitors safety in-house, but it is really down to all road users.
“In 2013, our employees drove 8.3 million kilometres in work vehicles, all of which are fitted with an In Vehicle Monitoring System to track a range of driving behaviour and set standards that go above and beyond the basics of road safety,” Mr Phelan said.
“In fact, a Roma-based employee drove more than 33,000km - as far as Europe and back - last year with a flawless record.
Queensland Police Minister Jack Dempsey said the company was doing some good work.
“We see more and more Queenslanders every year losing their lives over things that are avoidable,” he said.
“If we could put a price on a fatality, each death costs $3.5 million to the community, let alone the pain and the suffering.”
