Australia plans to fast-track the enhancement of its naval fleet to counter China's military expansion, a new review suggests. 

Reports say that a review to be released this week describes current and planned naval capabilities as insufficient for the evolving security threats, necessitating more lethal warships and an increased focus on missile technology.

The government aims to increase the number of surface combatants and introduce new, more capable warships quickly, addressing the recruitment challenge for additional personnel.

The review allegedly calls for discontinuing Australia’s troubled patrol boat project and potentially retiring the older ANZAC class frigates. 

It recommends reducing the Hunter class frigate project from nine to six ships, with a shift towards smaller, missile-equipped vessels.
