Believed to be the world’s first permanent glow path installation, Gosford City has taken the lead on what could be the future for night-time pedestrians.

The footpath is a mix of normal Australian aggregate imbued with phosphorous zinc sulfide to absorb ultraviolet light during the day and emit a soft glow at night.

Gosford City has been quick to point out that the path is non-toxic, and will glow for 8-14 hours after sundown.

The footpath is part of a $146.5 million project to improve Gosford railway crossings, which is itself part of the $1.1 billion Northern Sydney Freight Corridor Program.

Deputy Prime Minister and federal Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss was on site for the launch, saying the futuristic footpath would make travelling safer while providing a "more economical alternative to installing powered lighting to service the footpath".
