The Assistant Manager Safety facilitates methodologies for the development of the safety cases for a radioactive waste management facility. The Assistant Manager supports the development of the safety cases by ensuring that the safety cases demonstrate that any proposed radioactive waste management facility and its operations comply with safety standards. The incumbent facilitates research and development activities for storage and disposal pathways needed for the development of the safety cases. The incumbent implements activities to support safety case development through all phases, including design, construction, commissioning, operation, decommissioning and post closure. The Assistant Manager provides specialist safety case advice to internal and external stakeholders, and fosters the development of safety lead design for waste disposal pathways.

What we are looking for

  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of radiation and nuclear safety concepts, safety in radioactive waste management, design safety features, waste characterisation, and controls.
  • Proven experience in undertaking safety assessments and making risk-informed decisions.
  • Experience in the radioactive waste management industry.
  • Maintain knowledge of regulatory systems and practices relevant to radiation safety regulatory needs, safety case methods and standards of practices, including their applicability and limitations, and provide support to staff to do likewise.

We are seeking a team member who brings enthusiasm for safety and is open to working with a multi-disciplinary team to embed safety by design for future national radioactive waste disposal pathways. As a relatively new agency, ARWA continues to develop its foundations and is seeking people willing to embark on an exciting journey of continued change and growth. The role presents an opportunity to be involved at the foundational stage of a significant project for Australia and contribute to a critical national infrastructure program. The role is suited to a candidate with a strong background in radiation/nuclear safety and a growth mindset. Safety case development skills are desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will be developed in this area.
