A proposed gas terminal in Geelong has raised concerns about safety and sustainability.  

A floating LNG terminal plan put forth by Viva Energy aims to tackle a looming gas shortage as Bass Strait supplies decline. 

Viva Energy says the project, near its Geelong refinery, could supply 80 per cent of Victoria’s annual gas needs and meet rising demand by 2028. 

However, residents and environmental groups are alarmed by the proximity to homes - just 220 metres away - and the environmental risks. 

Environment Victoria warns the terminal could contribute up to 37 per cent of the state’s emissions by 2035, excluding transport and production emissions. The group says the plan should be rejected. 

The Victorian government supports moving away from gas reliance but has left room for terminal projects meeting environmental standards. Australian Energy Producers chief Samantha McCulloch blames years of inaction for forcing the state to import gas.  

Planning approval is pending further environmental impact assessments, with 400 submissions filed and public hearings scheduled.
